5 Helpful Tips to Prevent Acne Scars

Acne can be difficult to deal with because of the mental and physical toll it has on your body. After dealing with acne episodes, acne scars can become another stressful challenge.

Here are 5 helpful tips for doing away with skin blemishes:

What are acne scars?

Acne scars are the results of inflammation of acne blemishes. The acne pore swells, and a breakdown occurs in the wall of the pore. They are areas of pitted or raised skin. When acne develops, they penetrate the skin deeply and damage the skin and tissue beneath it. As a result, your body attempts to repair your skin by producing collagen fibers. The overproduction or lack of collagen can cause acne scars.

The type of scar depends on how much collagen your body makes.

Depressed acne scars: If the body produces too little collagen, depressions or pits form as the skin heals.

Raised acne scars: Sometimes the body produces too much collagen as it tries to heal the skin and underlying tissue. When this happens, a person develops a raised acne scar.

How can you prevent acne scars?

Acne prevention is one of the key steps to getting acne scars under control. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent breakouts and scars from developing. If you already have scars, there are plenty of treatments that can minimize their appearance. Different treatments exist depending on how much scarring you have. Let’s look at 5 helpful tips!

1. Early treatment is the best method

The most important step of preventing acne scars is the most obvious: acne prevention. While you’re trying to calm the acne you have, you can prevent new ones from forming. There are plenty of ways to manage acne. One of which is understanding your skin type and using the right skincare products. That way, you know what products or treatments are right for your skin and what to avoid.

2. Use clinically proven acne products

Acne treatments include prescription medications, topical and oral varieties, and over-the-counter (OTC) skincare products. These treatments can vary in strength to tackle acne blemishes and scars. Skin-lightening agents called hydroquinone, and Tranexamic Acid can help fade acne scars. It does this by inhibiting pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) from making more pigments.  Of course, it’s always important to consult with a doctor or a medical aesthetician to see if certain products are right for you.

3. Don’t pick at pimples or scabs

Picking pimples is a huge no-no. Popping pimples could spread the bacteria and pus from the infected pore to the surrounding pores in the area. It would cause acne to spread. Picking at scabs can delay your body’s natural healing process, which causes your acne’s healing to take longer. It increases the likelihood of developing acne scars as you lose tissue due to picking at it. That’s how you get depressed or pitted acne scars — the greater the damage done to the skin, the greater the change of tissue loss.

4. Reduce inflammation

Inflamed acne blemishes are more likely to leave scars behind than non-inflamed breakouts (blackheads and whiteheads). There are plenty of OTC treatments for inflamed acne; choosing one can feel overwhelming. There are three ingredients found commonly in over-the-counter products. They are benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur.

5. Wear sunscreen to prevent scars from darkening

Sunscreen doesn’t get rid of acne scars; it helps prevent the occurrence or darkening of acne scars. Sunlight is a major cause of pigmentation because exposure to UV rays increases the pigment that causes cells to darken (melanin). As a result, it is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Why Do You Need Several Laser Treatments to Rid Unwanted Hair?

Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin in the hair shaft and hair follicle. When the absorption of laser light is transformed into heat energy, it causes damage to the hair structure and stunts the growth of new hair.

Did you know that your hair does not grow all at the same time?

It grows in three phases:

  1. Anagen – growth phase.
  2. Catagen – transition phase.
  3. Telogen- dormant phase.

During the anagen phase, the hair is actively growing and produces an abundance of melanin. This phase lasts for a few weeks. Laser hair removal is most effective during this phase. The next stage is the catagen phase, known as the transitional phase. In this phase, the hair starts to detach from the skin and this process takes a few days. Laser energy is minimally effective during the catagen phase. In the telogen phase, the hair becomes dormant and is detached from the skin. The laser energy is not effective during this phase. This stage can last for a few months. The number of laser hair removal treatments depend on your skin type, hair colour, and the amount of hair. The effectiveness of hair removal also depends on the laser’s wavelength, pulsewidth, pulse shape, spot size, and fluence. Before you purchase a series of hair removal treatments, it is important to do research on the laser and to make sure that it is safe for your skin type.

Mommy Make Over with Tightsculpting & Incontilase

Motherhood is a joyful occasion in almost every woman’s life. Whether you’re a new mom or have multiple children, pregnancy can do a number on your body. Some women bounce back to their pre-pregnancy bodies fairly quickly and easily while others need a little extra help. If you’re having a hard time getting rid of the excess fat you gained during pregnancy, then consider getting the TightSculpting treatment here at OVO Medi Spa

TightSculpting for Fat Reduction and Stretch Mark

When diet and exercise alone aren’t cutting it, it’s time to consider alternative cosmetic treatments. Our Fotona TightSculpting treatment is a great and effective method for new moms who are actively trying to lose their post-pregnancy bump. And overall body fat TightSculpting is a Health Canada and FDA-approved laser for nonsurgical fat reduction. It specifically targets fat cells in specific parts of the body to permanently melt away stubborn fat.

The heat from the deep laser wavelength permanently melts fat away. Fat deposits in common problem areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, chin, and flanks will melt away in the procedure. At the same time, we have another surface laser wavelength to tighten and smooth out the skin.  For your comfort, our laser automatically detects how hot or cold each area is. As soon as it hits the optimal degree of celsius it immediately lets the professional laser technician know to move on to the next area.

Why consider TightSculpting after having a baby?

TightSculpting is an effective and perfectly safe method to assist with post-pregnancy weight loss. When it’s done in conjunction with a healthy exercise routine and diet, results can be fairly rapid and long-lasting. Plus, there’s no recovery or downtime required, which means you can focus on all of the joys of being a mom and spend plenty of time with your children. TightSculpting at OVO Medi Spa is a great option for busy moms who need to practice a little self-care after.

Are you a good candidate for post-pregnancy Tightsculpting?

Any woman who just had a baby and is struggling to lose excess weight is a good candidate for Tightsculpting treatment at Ovo. There is a waiting period, however. New moms are required to wait about 6 months after giving birth and after breastfeeding before they can pursue a TightSculpting treatment. It is important to give your body enough time to recover completely to avoid any complications.

What Are the Benefits of TightSculpting for New Moms?

Many women all over the world struggle to lose weight after giving birth. Sometimes, even when you’re doing everything right, losing weight can be a major uphill battle. If that’s something you can relate to, then TightSculpting fat reduction has a lot of benefits for you. Here are some benefits of TightSculpting:

It’s minimally invasive

Fotona TightSculpting is a topical laser treatment that heats up and destroys fat cells in your body so that your body can naturally expel them through your lymphatic system.

Quick and easy sessions

Each session takes anywhere between 20-45 minutes of your time, so you don’t have to be away from your child for too long.

Fast noticeable results

Most clients notice quick fat reduction results such as a flatter tummy after the 12-week mark. Fotona TightSculpting treatment consists of 4 20-to 45-minute sessions, the second of which takes place at the 4-week mark. Additional sessions can also be scheduled as needed.

No downtime or recovery required

Since TightSculpting is a non-invasive laser treatment that uses heat to penetrate through the fat cells, there’s absolutely no downtime or recovery period required. You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after each session.

Adverse reactions are extremely rare, but you may be asked to stay an extra 10 to 15 minutes for a brief observation. This is just in case you experience redness or skin sensitivity in the treatment area.

Other than that, you should be ready to continue caring for your child immediately after the treatment. Just remember to drink 8 glasses of water a day to speed up the fat reduction process from your body.

IncontiLase For Vaginal Stress Urinary Incontinence

Natural childbirth can cause vaginal laxity that may affect our feminine wellbeing and quality of life. About 40% of women experience stress urinary incontinence SUI, unintentional leaking when they sneeze, cough, jump, or play sports. Although practicing Kegel exercises can sometimes help, it may be enough to alleviate laxity and leaking.

Health Canada approves of Fotona to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) Fotona is one of the few companies with this approval. Gynecologists and medical professionals around the world use Fotona in their practice. The combination of two laser wavelengths used for the procedure is completely non-ablative. This can revert vaginal tissues back to a younger, healthier state.

How does IncontiLase work?

The IncontiLase treatment is based on the thermal effects of the laser on the vestibule and urethral orifice, as well as the anterior vaginal wall. A disposable piece is inserted into the vagina, similar to the speculum used during a Pap test.  The laser distributes short pulses of energy resulting in collagen neogenesis and remodeling.  This quick 30-40 minutes treatment leads to shrinking and tightening of the tissues around the vaginal walls and urethra, allowing you to stop the flow of urine.

What should I avoid after Incontilase?

After the laser treatment, you should avoid any activities that may irritate or cause infection.  Avoid hot baths, saunas, and rigorous physical activities. Also, avoid sexual intercourse for 14 days.

When do I see results with Incontilase?

It usually takes up to 4 months to see optimal results as it takes time for your tissues to build collagen, shrink, and tighten up.  Some people may need one more treatment depending on their condition.

What are the benefits of IncontiLase for moms?

Now you have the freedom of hopping on the trampoline or playing your favorite sports game, without wearing a pad or experiencing an embarrassing leak through your panties.  Another added benefit of the treatment is the tightening of the vaginal walls.

Laser Hair Removal for Men

Dealing with unwanted body hair on a weekly and sometimes daily basis takes up precious time. From constantly shaving thick hair to waxing hairy chests and plucking stray eyebrow hairs and manscaping, men have just as much unwanted body hair as women. Sometimes, the upkeep can be too overwhelming and time-consuming.

If you’re a man with unwanted body hair, then you have better options than just the standard at-home grooming kits. Continue reading to learn all about how laser hair removal works and find out if it’s the right solution for you.

How Does Laser Hair Removal for Men Work?

Laser hair removal is a clinical treatment that uses beams of light to bypass several layers of skin and essentially stunt the hair follicles beneath the surface without damaging the skin. The idea is to damage the hair follicles just enough to interrupt or stop the hair reproductive process for long periods of time. This treatment results in effective permanent hair removal for men.

In addition, it’s completely painless. But you may experience some of the following temporary side effects in the treatment areas:

Should You Get Laser Hair Thinning or Removal Treatment?

You may be wondering whether or not you’re a suitable candidate for removal treatment at OVO Medi Spa. Anyone who has an abundance of unmanageable facial or body hair is a good candidate for laser hair removal. If you’re feeling self-conscious about your appearance because of your body hair and are tired of constantly shaving or waxing, then this is the right treatment for you.

However, keep in mind that it’s a strictly cosmetic procedure. Laser hair removal doesn’t treat any underlying conditions that may be causing your excess body hair growth. Hormonal imbalances and some medication side effects can cause excess body hair growth. It’s important to look into the underlying causes of excess body hair before seeking laser hair removal to ensure the efficacy of the procedure.

What Areas of the Body Can be Treated?

Here is a list of the most common areas of the body for which hair removal for men is effective:

  • The glabella (space between the eyebrows)
  • Stomach
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Ears
  • Forehead
  • Nose
  • Scalp
  • Face
  • Chin

You can customize your laser hair removal treatments according to your specific needs. You can also have multiple treatment areas worked on simultaneously or just choose one main area. During the initial consultation, your skin care specialist will discuss all of your options with you, answer your questions, and address your concerns to work out a feasible treatment plan that works for you. For the best laser hair removal Vancouver, book a consultation with a professional at OVO Medi Spa to discuss a specific treatment plan.

Is Laser Hair Removal Treatment Permanent?

Although laser hair removal is thought to be a permanent hair removal treatment, that’s not entirely true—at least not for everyone. Each patient has different circumstances and potential underlying conditions going into the treatment that can cause the hair to grow back.

Furthermore, laser hair removal doesn’t completely destroy hair follicles in the treatment areas at one time because the hair grows in several stages. This is why you will also need a few treatments in the same area. Depending on how much hair needs to be removed, sometimes a few fine stray strands may be left behind. This is perfectly normal.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Do Men Need?

Hair removal for men is unique to each individual and will therefore have different treatment needs. Some patients may have significantly more or less hair that needs to be removed than others.

OVO Medi Spa offers preliminary consultations to discuss each patient’s needs and expectations prior to performing hair removal treatments.

What Can You Expect from Laser Hair Removal for Men?

As mentioned, there are a few misconceptions about laser hair removal for men you need to know before your appointment. First of all, it’s not necessarily a permanent solution. Second, repeat treatments might be required to achieve optimal results. Third, there will be a few stray hairs leftover and this is perfectly normal. Fourth, you may experience some of the aforementioned side effects. Your laser hair removal technician will go over everything with you during your initial consultation.

What Type Of Acne Do You Have?

Acne is a common skin condition that can occur at different times in our lives. While it does not pose a serious health risk, it can leave behind scars – not just physical, but psychological as well. Acne can cause significant distress, taking a toll on one’s self-confidence.

Types of Acne

  • Blackheads, or open comedones: A form of mild subsurface acne that occurs when impurities and dead skin cells get trapped inside pores. When these clogged pores open, the contaminants are exposed to the air causing them to oxidize and generate a dark brown or black colour.
  • Whiteheads, or closed comedones: Created when the contaminated clogged pore is covered by a superficial layer of the skin preventing oxidation to occur. It is identifiable by its small yellow/white centre surrounded by some inflammation.
  • Papules: Occurs when the clogging of a pore causes a hair follicle to become contaminated and inflamed. Papules are a form of moderate acne that appear as hard pink or red bumps that are prone to clustering.
  • Pustules: A more severe form of acne that is filled with pus and surrounded by marked redness from inflammation. They are larger than whiteheads and blackheads and can evolve into more severe cystic acne.
  • Nodules and cysts: Two of the most severe and painful forms of acne that penetrate deep into the skin and are most prone to scarring. Cysts occur when the clogged pore ruptures under the skin, causing impurities to contaminate surrounding tissue. The body reacts with an inflammatory response to prevent spreading, resulting in the formation of pus. Acne nodules can stay intact within the skin for a long period of time and results in hardening of the affected area

What Causes Acne?

A number of factors influence sebum production, but some people are more acne-prone than others because of their genes, lifestyle behaviour, and environment.

Hormones: Hormonal fluctuations may cause sebaceous glands (sebum-producing glands) to become overactive, increasing the chance of developing acne. This can happen during puberty, the menstrual cycle, and pregnancy.

Medications: Some medications may induce acne development. These medications include oral contraceptives that contain progestin, anabolic steroids, oral corticosteroids, and anticonvulsives.

Cosmetics: Makeup, skincare, and hair products can clog pores especially if they are oil-based. If you are prone to acne, it is best to use products that are oil free and noncomedogenic.

Diet: Certain foods cause acne flare-ups. These may include foods with high fat content or high sugar content / high glycemic carbohydrates. Although this will vary for each individual, you can control the acne flare-up by avoiding certain ingredients which triggers your acne.

Sweating: Perspiration combined with heat and pressure such as wearing a cap will make acne worse. Washing your face after you sweat is important to prevent skin from clogging and spreading bacteria.

Overwashing: It is recommended to wash your face twice daily using a mild cleanser if your skin is acne-prone.In addition, using strong cleansers, scrubbers, exfoliants or washing too often can irritate the skin and cause further acne development.

Picking or Squeezing Acne: This can increase the spread of oil and bacteria to other areas of your skin, and can cause further flare-up.

It is important to use proper skincare products to prevent and control acne. For mild to moderate acne breakouts, laser treatments combined with acne targeting products have clinically proven to be very effective.

What is the Major Cause of Skin Aging & What Can You Do About It?

The UV lights from the sun is the number one cause of skin aging. Long term exposure to UV light weakens collagen and elastin in your skin, breaking down skin tissues, and causing skin laxity and wrinkles. Wearing a UVA and UVB sunscreen delays the skin’s aging process.

So what is the difference between UVA and UVB?

UVB rays strike the outer layer of your skin and changes the DNA structure. Only a small percentage of sun’s UVB rays reach the ground. However, it is the cause of sunburn and skin cancer. UVB rays are shown on the sunscreen bottle as a SPF number. Some tanning salons have UVB and UVA beds, but both can damage your skin. The SPF number refers to its ability to filter UVB rays and how long it would take to cause redness compared to not wearing a SPF sunscreen.

UVA rays cause darkening and wrinkling of your skin, also known as photoaging. Long-term exposure leads to certain types of skin cancer.  UVA rays goes through window and clouds and penetrates into the deeper layer of your skin. About 95% of the UV rays reaching the ground are the UVA rays. Most tanning salons use UVA rays which are extremely harmful to your skin because this can cause skin cancer. Sunscreens with a broad spectrum protection will block UVA rays. If you want to keep your skin beautiful, it is important to wear sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days.
